SITE: SAN DIEGO CIVIC CENTER
This project started by presenting the Downtown Civic center as a problem that needs to be solved. This project responded with a plan for a district, for a site, and for a landmark. In the final stages of this project we addressed the macro, meso, and micro scales to prepare a project that works on a human scale, responding to the needs of the region, of the city, and of the people.
A unique moment happens for the City of San Diego at the intersection of B and Union. With the proposal of a green street on Union, redevelopment of the Civic Center Plaza, and an opportunity to connect the two, the proposed site is a catalyst for energy and engagement. Nearby transit; bus stops, trolley stations, protected bike lanes, brings the city to us and asks the question “What happens here?” The Master Plan aims to answer that question by providing a variety of moments, activities, and places to be. Green plazas, parks, and walkways provide much needed relief and nature to an otherwise concrete jungle. Widened sidewalks aim to accommodate a more active city, promoting walking, rideshare, and cycling. Narrower lanes slow the hustle and bustle of the city, reducing noise pollution, slowing down traffic and making the streets safer places for everyone. Each block of the Master Plan focuses on key moves of opening up blocks, inviting pedestrians and visitors, creating interest through building layouts, and programming multiple points of interest.
